Northeast Data Vault Completes Network Upgrade
Marlborough, MA, (September 17, 2004) - Data center operator Northeast Data Vault (NEDV) recently completed a significant network upgrade at its Marlborough data center, benefiting both current and future customers. At a time when other data center operators are closing facilities or ramping down operations, NEDV continues to invest. The changes were made to support the company's growth.
The upgrades were threefold:
- New, redundantly-configured Juniper Networks M-series routers weredeployed at the "core" of the data center, where they connect on one side to NEDV's Internet providers and on the other to NEDV's internal data center network.
- New, redundantly-configured Cisco Catalyst 3550-series switches weredeployed internally in the data center network, providing connection points for NEDV's data center customers.
- An additional 65 megabits per second (Mbps) of connectivity to the Internet was installed.
The Juniper routers can each deliver up to 6.4 gigabits per second (Gbps) of throughput. According to Ken Bliss, Director of Engineering at NEDV, "Improved performance, higher reliability, security capabilities, and cost-effectiveness were the goals for our upgrade program. We evaluated a number of alternative vendors and found the Juniper routers substantially faster than other routers in their class, and they efficiently handle our
traffic loads. They are also particularly effective at handling malicious
activity like Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, which can interfere with delivering customer traffic reliably 24/7."
Security was also a consideration with NEDV's switch replacement. The Cisco Catalyst 3550-series switches include rate-limiting capabilities that NEDV deemed desirable. Continues Bliss "Customers sometimes want us to cap the amount of bandwidth they use, in order to meet their budgetary requirements." The same rate-limiting capability can be configured to limit the impact of a DoS attack that causes an unexpected and unwanted traffic peak.
NEDV's data center bandwidth was upgraded through the installation of a 155 Mbps OC-3 fiber connection to Conversent Communications, one of NEDV's upstream Internet providers.
